What is a UTM link?
A UTM link is a normal webpage URL with campaign parameters added to it. Analytics tools can use those parameters to help you distinguish where visits came from and which campaign or placement generated them.
The five common UTM parameters
utm_source identifies the source, such as instagram or newsletter. utm_medium describes the channel, such as social, email or cpc. utm_campaign names the campaign. Optional utm_term and utm_content can distinguish keywords, creatives or placements.
UTM naming tips
Choose a simple naming convention and use it consistently. Keep names descriptive, avoid spaces when possible, and do not switch between different spellings for the same channel. Consistency makes campaign reports easier to read later.
Useful UTM examples
For an Instagram bio link, try source instagram, medium social, campaign ebook_launch, content bio_link. For a WhatsApp promotion, use source whatsapp, medium message, and a campaign name that describes the promotion.
Why this matters for small businesses and creators
If several posts and channels all point to the same page, ordinary traffic totals cannot tell you which promotion worked. Consistent UTM links give you a cleaner way to compare campaigns and make better marketing decisions.
